Don’t look now, but the Boston Celtics are finally looking like the team we all thought we would see this season. After their abysmal 10-10 start where they looked like they were constantly out of sync and lacking a true identity, this team is finally looking like the Celtics we know and love as they remain undefeated in 2019 and dominate one of the best defensive teams in the league.
For me, the best part of this win was another 30+ assist night for this team. Like Brad said in his post game interview, the passing has been there all season they’ve just gone through times where open shots are being missed. He’s right, they’ve moved the ball well this year but it always looks better when it ends in a make. This teams wins by spreading teams out with their depth and when they can move the ball and make their shots, their gonna be successful and we saw that tonight.
Heading into this game we all knew that the Pacers love running high pick and rolls with Oladipo and Sabonis and the Celtics did an incredible job of defending it. The Celtics did a great job of picking up screens, and playing great team defense. They were communicating, rotating, and shutting down the Pacers game plan. It was definitely satisfying to see this level of team defense against one of the top teams in the East and it’s gonna need to continue moving forward.
The trade Jaylen Brown crowd has been awfully quiet over the past few weeks as they should be. Of course his start to the 18-19 season was nothing short of a disaster. It’s no secret he was a major reason for the Celtics slow start. After a remarkable playoff campaign just a few months before, Brown was absolutely horrible in the first half of this season which only fueled the trade Jaylen band of idiots and their delusional agenda. Listen, if Jaylen hadn’t shown us what he could do in the playoffs the year before in which he lead the team in scoring, I’d be all over him too. But he proved what kind of player he can be, and we were all just waiting for him to show up this year, and let me tell you, he is here. Over the last 20 games Brown is averaging 13.8/4.2/1.1 and last night he was tied for the team lead with 22 points on 7-12 shooting along with 7 rebs and 3 assists. His defense looked solid and while he’s always been known to have a few mishaps on the defensive end of the floor, similar to Tatum, he’s really been stepping up and limiting mistakes which is going to need to continue moving forward. Over the past 5 games in which the Celtics are 4-1 Jaylen is averaging 17/4.6/2.6 with 58/47% splits. The point is this is the Jaylen we need to see night in, night out for this team to be successful. There’s no other way around it, he is a major key to this teams success and if you still want to harp on how bad is start was, just stop it because he’s been playing some really quality basketball in this second half of the season and it’s been pretty fun to watch.
Gordon Hayward is also someone who has received a lot of criticism in the first half of the season but took it in stride and is really starting to play like the Hayward we signed out of Utah.
In the first half of season he looked timid, and was lacking the confidence he needed to get back to where he was before his injury. To me it’s been really refreshing to see him improve over these last few weeks and really start coming out of his shell. It looks like he’s getting his quick first step back and more importantly he’s got his confidence back. He’s essential to this teams success and if he keeps improving he’s gonna be really fun to watch coming down the stretch.
The bench put together one hell of a performance for 73 points. It was great to see the depth of this team on full display last night and take the load of Kyrie for once.
Finally, we were treated to a show last night, headlined by none other, than the Timelord. I mean how many times are these fools gonna try to drive to the rim with Timelord on the floor.
I mean come on.
Stop it Timelord! The Pacers have families!
A great team win against one of the top teams in the East. After the slow start that had everyone in Boston losing their minds, the Celtics look like their coming around and playing some really great team basketball. Back at em again tonight in Miami, lets keep this train rolling.
